Information Resources in the Sciences and Engineering. A Laboratory Workbook.
Hodina, Alfred; And Others
Intended for the laboratory session of a 2-credit course on science and engineering information, this workbook introduces upper level undergraduate and graduate students to traditional and computerized library resources. Initially it presents the student with the basic information tools used to locate books, magazines, and journals, and includes exercises on the card catalog and serials listings. It proceeds to cover information tools used to identify papers published in the science and engineering literature, including magazines, journals, proceedings, and conferences, with exercises using the major indexing and abstracting sources. Finally, it exposes the student to the newer nontraditional approaches of accessing information and utilizes online computer searching exercises to teach bibliographic database techniques, concentrating on the DIALOG system and the NTIS database. An appendix provides samples of an online search and an offline computer printout. The workbook concludes with a listing of 66 subject guides to the literature of science and technology and a bibliography of 81 references. (Author/RAA)
