Produced in response to a school board's directive to develop a plan for implementing a standardized curriculum in the basic subjects on a district-wide basis, this instructional packet is intended for use by teachers of a course in functional basic English skills for eleventh grade students. The packet contains preparatory sheets, activity sheets, evaluation sheets, and answer keys for teaching various basic reading skills. Among the skills covered are (1) vocabulary development, (2) word recognition, (3) study skills, (4) locating main ideas, (5) inferring details, (6) determining cause and effect relationships, (7) determining logical generalizations in a reading passage, (8) distinguishing between fact and fiction, (9) identifying conclusions based on insufficient evidence, (10) following oral and written directions, (11) locating and using reference materials, and (12) using dictionaries, indexes, maps, and transportation schedules.
