Community Concerns and Extension Youth Programs. Proceedings Regional Conference (February 18-20, 1981). Publication 28.
White, Leigh Cree, Ed.
The 4-H/Community Resource Development workshop was designed to help people conducting Extension 4-H programs on sensitive and complex community issues improve their ability to create a better climate for discussion of alternatives and development of community projects. Topics of the presentations included the role of the 4-H administrator, resource utilization, opportunities for community resource development, group dynamics, community development processes, human development, youth-adult interaction, and youth involvement in politics. A social action program in Manchester, New Hampshire; a citizen involvement training service in Massachusetts; and a youth training program in Washington, D.C. were described. The clientele, youth and adult involvement, what happened to the youth and the community, a program evaluation, and the commitment of 4-H professionals were described for 10 specific 4-H programs: an anti-vandalism program in an unnamed community; Maine programs of emergency mapping and marine education; a Maryland program for troubled youth; a New Jersey program for youth with social difficulties; a New Hampshire job placement program; a West Virginia cultural heritage program; and New York programs for child care and parenting preparation, coastal resources, and for possible inclusion of Little Sandy Creek in the state's recreational river system.
