Forty students who had been enrolled in secondary programs for mildly and moderately retarded students in rural Iowa were interviewed as part of a longitudinal study and results were compared with a similar group from a metropolitan area. Interviews focused on eight topics: living environment, type of employment, job changes, savings and money management, sexual problems, antisocial behavior, marriage and children, and use of leisure time. Among major findings were that the majority of Ss continued to live with their parents, at least for 3 to 5 years after leaving school; 55% had jobs compared with 69% of the metropolitan Ss, with equal numbers of men and women working; the majority of Ss reported having a savings account; there was little evidence of deviant sexual problems, although there was a lack of heterosexual interaction; there were infrequent acts of violence or delinquency, and only 14% of the rural Ss belonged to any organized club or activity, while leisure activities reported were largely solitary and passive.
