Pediatric Language Programs. Pediatric Language Clinic--An Educational and Counseling Outreach Program: For the Family of the Communicatively Delayed Infant and Child. Second Edition.

The Pediatric Language Clinic Program in Blount County, Tennessee, serving 36 to 54 communicatvely handicapped children (0 to 5 years old) is described. The program stresses intensive habilitation with groups of two to five parents and children in one hour sessions one to four times a week. The program encourages maximum parental involvement; is staffed by a pediatric language specialist, a clinical social worker, and two aides; and provides integrated educational, affective, and financial counseling to families. Briefly noted is involvement of students in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Tennessee, program rationale, and program philosophy. A case example demonstrates the effects of unified counseling in affective, education, and financial areas. Program procedures including enrollment, the parent home training component, and consultation are outlined. The infant and preschool program components are detailed in terms of population, parent home training, goals, program schedule, infant objectives, parent objectives, curriculum, and sample session topics and activities. Sample lesson plans appropriate for use in the small groups are included. Among 8 appendixes are an outline for parents of steps to teach vocabulary, a sample token chart for self help skills, a program information handout sheet, and examples of infant stimulation activities.
