A survey of 478 educators in Maine public elementary schools revealed their assessments of the most useful skills for elementary principals to have. The superintendents, teachers, and teaching and non-teaching principals who responded to the survey ranked the importance of each of 54 technical, conceptual, and human-relations competency items. The researchers compiled an overall ranking of all items and used the chi-square statistic to determine differences in rankings among the groups of educators. In the composite ranking, eight of the ten top-rated skills for principals were in the area of human relations. They included demonstrating a genuine personal interest in children and supporting staff members in their relationships with students and parents. The results showed further that teaching principals rely more on human-relations skills and display more understanding of important technical and conceptual competencies than do non-teaching principals.
