The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) believes that a major need in school health education is better understanding about what health education is, what it is for, and who should provide it. Recognizing this need, the National PTA, in 1975, initiated the Comprehensive School/Community Health Education (CS/CHE) Project. The Project has involved hundreds of parents, students, teachers, school administrators, and health care professionals in 13 states working to help communities better understand what health education means, and to rally support for improved health education in schools and communities. This manual is one outcome of the CS/CHE Project. It is intended as a guide for leaders who want better health education for their schools and communities. The ideas included in the guide were developed by PTA volunteers in the project's pilot states, and validated in eight demonstration states. The purpose of the guidebook is to present activities and processes used in those states in a way that will help others start such projects. The guidebook is organized by two series of steps that have most often led to success for others. The first series of steps is intended to help project organizers develop an overall picture of the proposed project. The second is designed to help leaders develop a successful planning process. It contains specific suggestions and ideas for the person charged with leading the planning process. In the appendix are additional materials that may prove helpful in planning efforts. These include lists of other organizations, including the State PTA Projects, where information about comprehensive school/community health education and materials can be obtained. (KC)
