Validation of Health Services Careers Curriculum Manual.
Stone, Sheila D.
This report is the result of a field test of "Health Service Careers" curriculum materials developed and published by the Curriculum and Instructional Materials Center, Oklahoma State Department of Vocational Technical Education. The results and conclusions reported in the study relate to student achievement and teacher evaluations and comments. The study was designed to identify those concepts for which 20 percent or more of the students were not showing achievement, as measured by the students' ability to respond correctly to the test items in the curriculum manual. Overall, students in all but two schools did score 80 percent or above on all unit tests. The conclusion derived from the study is that the curriculum materials meet the needs of the instructors. They seemed to welcome the increase of matching and select-from-a-list-type questions in contrast to the profuse discussion questions in the practical nursing series. It is recommended that for future revisions more assignment sheet and job sheets be added. It was suggested by some instructors that the pronunciation of medical terms be listed beside the words themselves to aid students in the learning process. It was also suggested that charts not be used as test questions, and it was recommended that the Curriculum and Instructional Materials Center should study the first aid and nutrition units to ascertain why achievement was lower on these two units.
