Extending S.D.L. in an Engineering College: Experiment Year Two.
Moulden, H.
The results of a second year of experimentation in self-directed learning (SDL) of English for Special Purposes are presented. The experiment was carried out with a group of 13 intermediate level students at the "Ecole des Mines" in Nancy, France. Changes in the original strategy are described. In addition to communication exercises directed by a facilitator and work on an individual basis, once-a-week small group sessions were added. These sessions also followed the self-directed learning model. The results of the experiment are analyzed according to: (1) results of the questionnaire filled in at the end of the year by the participants, (2) certain results bearing on the SDL experiment obtained from a questionnaire filled in by all first and second year students in the school, and (3) some measurements made by the author during the experiment. It was found that generally students preferred this method of self-directed learning to the traditional one, finding it more effective and agreeable. (Author/AMH)
