Computer tape files of student enrollment data were analyzed three times in an 18-month period to determine the effects of closing five of Seattle's elementary schools in May 1979 on the enrollments of students residing within those attendance boundaries. The changes in enrollment figures in the areas where schools were closed were compared to changes in selected neighborhoods outside the closed school attendance areas deemed similar in character and to changes in the district as a whole. In addition, the changes in enrollment were compared to those in nondesegregated school neighborhoods and to those directly involved in desegregation. The author concluded that no substantial evidence was found in the study to indicate that school closure necessarily causes enrollment decline in the affected neighborhoods. (Author/WD)
