Designed to observe changes in biracial student behavior brought about by Project BACSTOP (a series of structured experiences in a variety of wilderness settings meant to bring students of different races together in stressful adventure activities geared to promote interaction, communication, and cooperation), this evaluation studied five different types of situations among seventh grade students at Northwestern Junior High School to determine the extent of biracial student interaction. The evaluation design consisted of four product objectives, each of which was analyzed for level of attainment. Data indicated a notable parallel between BACSTOP and a lowered level of interracial violence in the school. During the implementation of the program, a worthwhile level of positive biracial interaction occurred. There was no evidence to suggest that the operation of the program adversely affected academic achievement. In fact, there appeared to be positive gains. Although other factors could have accounted for some of the positive changes noted, it was the opinion of the evaluation staff that the BACSTOP program made a positive contribution to those changes and that it was a major factor in the improvement of the educational quality and the social climate at Northwestern Junior High School.
