School and Community. Volume II. The Consequences of Some Policy Choices.
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Paris (France). Centre for Educational Research and Innovation.
The two monographs contained in this volume are concerned with analyzing the consequences of policy choices affecting the interrelationships between schools and their environments. The first study, "The Relationship between the School and the Community," shows that the character of school-community relationships varies systematically on the basis of the characteristics of the school, its community, and the nature of the social commitment made by the school. The second study, "Education and the Integration of Community Services," is concerned with finding methods for defining and fulfilling community needs as attempts are made to integrate services. It consists of an analysis of ten studies from nine countries (New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Switzerland, United States, Canada, and the Netherlands) that describe and assess integrative or collaborative programs involving education and other community services. The study suggests a structure within which individual countries could undertake the analysis and assessment of integrative programs at the community level. (Author/MK)
