This paper reviews the research carried out in New Zealand classrooms since 1967, including conference papers, theses and dissertations, published articles, and unpublished reports. Classroom research is defined as any work, irrespective of disciplinary affiliation, which is concerned with the actual day to day operation of classroom life. Review of the research is divided into six areas: (1) teacher/student/parent expectations; (2) teacher location, classroom participation, and classroom structure; (3) behavior modification; (4) achievement studies; (5) teaching strategies and student thinking; and (6) recent developments. The works are discussed in narrative form, with an appendix of the references. Future directions of classroom research in the United States, Great Britain, and New Zealand are identified, with the following anticipated developments noted: an increase in interdisciplinary and multilevel research; more emphasis placed on the teacher's frame of reference; the use of anthropological procedures as a result of methodological developments; a more flexible look at the criterion of effectiveness; and a growing worldwide interest in neglected variables in classroom research.
