This paper provides a broad perspective on theories of emotional development and evaluates the implications of different theories for the practicing teacher. Not only psychoanalytic theories but also many theories of emotion contribute to the understanding of children. For example, behaviorist, experimental, ethological, humanist, developmental, computer simulation and mathematical modeling perspectives have provided insights into emotional experience. While all the theories have deficiencies from an intellectual point of view, some are thought to be better than others from a pragmatic point of view. However, a theory that adequately explains the emotional development of children does not exist. Presently available theories are simplistic and ignore the close connection between emotion, language and cognition. In conclusion, it is suggested that the use of elements of Carl Rogers' theory would lead to healthier emotional behavior in the classroom. Teachers trained to symbolize their emotional experiences accurately will be better prepared to facilitate the emotional development of children. (Author/RH)
