A report of a 1980 workshop on the relevance of U.S. education to students from developing countries is presented. Sponsors were the Agency for International Development (AID) and the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs. The 80 participants included representatives from AID, professionals from the academic sector and community service organizations, and AID students and alumni. Topics were as follows: (1) an overview of the way that U.S. faculty consider the relevance of its education for students from developing countries; (2) prospects of graduate education for these foreign students; (3) programs and approaches offered at different institutions and in idfferent disciplines, including economics, education, science, and engineering; (4) the way that Brazil is trying to meet its needs through foreign and domestic education for its students; (5) the relevance of U.S. education to AID developing countries; (2) propspects of graduate education for needs; (6) plans and priorities of AID; and (7) factors at different institutions and in different disciplines, selection to reentry. The workshop resulted in proposals for improving the procedures and planning of AID participant training programs, strategies for increasing the educational relevance of programs for students from developing countries, and predictions for the future.
