The need for demographic research relevant to plans concerning adult education, day care, nursery care, and after-school services is increasing along with the demand for such services. Such demographic data are essential for the wise policymaking needed to build effective educational systems for the future. Present trends having an effect on education include the increased addition of women to the work force, continued immigration to major United States cities, and the ease of mobility, or the ability for populations within the United States to move around. State and local level educational agencies must be able to examine and understand the roles of the changing family, internal migration, teenage childbearing, and the decline in school enrollment to make education effective for the present and the future.
