Staff Burn-Out. What Is It, What Causes It, and What Can One Do About It?
Jadin, Tom
The phenomenon of "burn-out" is most frequently experienced by people who, in the course of their jobs, work with other people such as students, patients, or clients in situations that involve intense personal interaction. The complex symptoms of the burn-out syndrome are described in this paper. The most common of these symptoms is a change of attitude toward work and other people, stress-induced physical problems, and a sense of isolation. In a discussion of the causes of burn-out, it is suggested that while the major factor of this syndrome is the individual's inner emotions and reactions, the atmosphere of the work place and attitudes of supervisors and co-workers are contributing elements. Techniques for coping with burn-out and preventing it are discussed. (JD)
