Helping Teachers Acquire Effective Strategies. Strand VII. Teacher Behavior and Student Learning.
Spaulding, Robert L.
The Spaulding Teacher Activity Rating Schedule (STARS) describes twenty-five teaching styles. In the "Story Teller" teaching pattern, children listen while the teacher narrates, explains, or reads. The teacher motivates the students to contribute. In the "Lecturer" style, the teacher explains, describes, or illustrates but does not ask the student to recall or apply abstract concepts. The "Examiner" focuses student attention on content areas and asks for recall of specific information. The "Entertainer" frequently digresses from the subject matter while the students contribute digressions of their own. The "Controller" uses negative control techniques such as criticism and threat of punishment. "Counselors" respond to behaviors of students by giving reinforcement, redirecting behavior, and setting goals. The "Discovery Teacher" focuses the attention of students on specific categories or concrete materials. "Socratic Teachers" focus on deduction of logical implications to be drawn from factual information. Other teaching and classroom management styles involve behavior modification principles, attentiveness and on-task factors, the rote process, various authoritarian methods, and discipline control approaches.
