Experiential Education in Harrison District 2: The First Year. A Program Development Model in Process, 1973-1976.
Truitt, Steven
Describing a developmental model and efforts during the first year of a three to five year plan to develop an experiential program in Harrison District #2 (Colorado) patterned from Outward Bound, this report concentrates on five major areas of concern. A section on developing a support structure describes activity-based workshops, during which teachers and administrators were introduced to concepts of experiential and environmental education, and reveals plans for future involvement of staff and parents. Discussion of faculty development centers on in-service training workshops for teachers and staff, which promote team-building, and presents objectives and aspects which seem to be essential to their success. An outline of current efforts in curriculum development centers on resource centers, documentation and evaluation, brainstorming, and curriculum development courses. A discussion of skills training includes activities and techniques used in outdoor events and reveals plans for future workshops and seminars. The report on pilot programs emphasizes the primary objective of demonstrating feasibility, and lists 10 features which a pilot program should test. A final section attributes the initial success of the model to be the successful commitment of influential administrators and the emphasis placed on both planning and program skills. (JD)
