Practical Handles #2: The Home-School- Community Partnership.
Langpap, Wayne, Comp.
This booklet provides synopses of 36 practitioners' workshop presentations on promoting effective inter- relationships between the home, the school and the community. The brief articles are grouped under five headings: Strengthening the Home; Utilizing Community Resources; Home/School/Community Partnership in Planning and Decision Making; Inter-Agency Cooperation; and Community Education and the K-12 Program. Models for helping parents become better parents, for the enhancement of creativity in the home, and for motivating children's intellectual curiosity are among the topics discussed. Community resources were emphasized in reports of volunteer action pools, traveling exhibitions, school and business cooperation as well as teachers' use of newspapers as curriculum aids. Planning and decision making were explored in reports of the activities of parents in open school classrooms, networks of community improvement councils, and parent-teachers' associations. Models of inter-agency cooperation were suggested in reports of a cooperative effort in building a learning center, Utah State's involvement in self-help school projects in Bolivia, and a youth resource mobilization project for Navajo students. Community school cooperation was elaborated in reports on a school district volunteer resource bank and on agency collaboration in providing classes for gifted students. Many more programs in each of the five areas are discussed. Brief descriptions of the articles are provided in pages 13 through 17 of the booklet. (Author/RH)
