Orientation to Instruction in the Community College: A Series of Ten Self-Instructional Units for Part-Time Faculty Members, and Other Instructors New to the Community College.
League for Innovation in the Community Coll., Los Angeles, CA.
This series of self-instructional units was designed to acquaint new instructors with the special mission of the community college and with teaching and evaluation strategies that enhance instructor effectiveness. Unit I considers the open-door philosophy and curricular and governance characteristics of the community college, while Unit II profiles the academic and demographic characteristics of community college students. Unit III introduces the instructor to student personnel services that can promote student retention and success. Unit IV teaches instructors to write performance objectives and plan instructional outcomes. Unit V suggests ways of enhancing learning, motivation, and student-teacher communication. While Unit VI focuses on large group instruction, providing guidelines for selecting instructional methods and for making optimal use of lectures, discussions, and demonstrations, Unit VII deals with individualized instruction, describing contract learning, self-instructional packages, self-paced modules, personalized systems of instruction, and audio-tutorial methods. Unit VIII is concerned with the selection and use of instructional media. Unit IX provides guidelines for constructing true/false, multiple-choice, matching, short answer, and essay tests and introduces criterion references. Unit X presents a student evaluation process centered around criterion-referenced grading. Each unit identifies objectives, provides reinforcement exercises, and suggests further readings. (JP)
