Fifty randomly selected adults, who had attained their high school diploma through Surry Community College's (SCC's) General Educational Development (GED) program in 1978, were surveyed in 1980 to determine: (1) the usefulness of GED participation in gaining employment and in obtaining promotions and salary increases; (2) the percentage of GED graduates who were enrolled in a post-secondary institution; and (3) the usefulness of the GED program in preparing students for future academic success in terms of college grade point average (GPA). Major findings, based on 36 responses, indicate that 48.84% of the graduates were employed full-time; 11.63% were employed part-time; 9.30% were unemployed; and 20.93% were in college. Of the employed graduates, 34.62% indicated that the GED program was helpful in gaining employment, 15.38% said the program helped them obtain a promotion, and 19.23% related their GED participation to salary increases. The nine GED graduates who were enrolled in college earned a mean GPA of 2.92, which compares favorably with the mean GPA of 2.75 earned by high school graduates enrolled at SCC.
