Developing Student Self-Discipline in Schools and Classrooms is a program designed for teachers, counselors, administrators, educational decision-makers and other school personnel who are concerned about the disruptive effect of discipline problems in many schools today. The course offers a repertoire of proven techniques and skills useful for creating a climate of self-discipline within the school, including role-playing, goal definition, reinforcement, exemplary instruction, personal assertion, and interpersonal influencing. The course is based on the philosophy that school discipline problems are rooted in the way that adults operate with one another and with students, and in the way the school is organized as a social system. Therefore, discipline problems cannot be significantly reduced by concentrating only on the misdeeds of individual students. Attention must be focused on establishing long-range continuing habits of behavior that teach and sustain self-discipline among all members of the school. (Author/JK)
