Attitude Change Toward the Physically Disabled through the Use of Short Stories.
Bond, Carole L.
A study was conducted to determine whether the reading of short stories about the physically disabled would have any effect on the attitude of physically normal students toward the physically disabled. The sample consisted of eight classes of eighth grade students. Form A of the Attitude Towards Disabled Persons--Revised for Children was used as the pretest, and Form B of the same scale was used as the posttest. Four classes served as the treatment group, with two of them receiving both pretests and posttests and two classes receiving posttests only. Four classes served as the control group, with two receiving both pretests and posttests and two receiving posttests only. Reading achievement measures were given to all students. Students in the treatment group were assigned five short stories about the physically disabled and completed information sheets on each. The findings revealed that (1) the reading of short stories about the physically disabled did not cause the students in the treatment group to become significantly more positive in their attitudes toward such people, (2) reading achievement scores were not a factor in determining whether an attitude change occurred, (3) sex of the student was not a factor in influencing attitudes, and (4) attitudes of the students, regardless of whether they read the stories, changed after a period of eight weeks, becoming more positive in nature.
