Alcoholism is a problem of immense proportions. Views about alcoholism range from consideration of the problem as a moral weakness to the disease concept approach. Since the effects of alcoholic intake can be benevolent as well as toxic, the dilemma centers around alcohol usage. Various theories have been formulated, experimented with, and researched about the physiological, sociological, and psychological aspects of alcoholism. A variety of symptoms evidence the progression of alcohol addiction in the abuser. Treatment which considers the physical, social, and psychological etiology of the problem represents a continuum of care. New Jersey has implemented the Alcohol Treatment and Rehabilitation Act, mandated coverage for alcoholism by health insurance carriers, and regulated intoxicated driving offenses. Funding for rehabilitation programs has been initiated on federal and state levels and model programs have been developed.
