In 1960, Project TALENT gathered demographic, cognitive, and socio-pyschological data from a nationwide sample of high school students. In addition, responses from a saturation sample of 16,000 cases in Knox County, Tennessee were collected. The relationships between attitudes, personality traits, and subsequent alcohol abuse (as shown by Knox County police arrest records) were investigated to identify factors predictive of alcohol abuse. Responses by 551 students charged with offenses involving alcohol abuse between 1961 and 1974 (A's) were compared with responses of 661 students with no alcohol abuse charges (C's). Comparisons on 473 variables revealed significant differences between A's and C's on 107 variables. A's showed greater discrepancies than C's between aspiration and performance levels. A's reported poorer health, less participation in sports requiring developed gross motor skills, and poorer self-concepts than did C's. A's also tended to come from unsupportive home environments characterized by poor parent-child communication and the absence of a male model. (NRB)
