Stress Within Students: Do Educators Cause and/or Prolong It?
Youngs, Bettie B.
Because studies have shown that educators need to become more aware of the effects of stress upon their students, this guide presents basic information about stress and anxiety in children from infancy to adolescence. Experiences are provided through which students can learn to deal more effectively with stress, together with definitions of the sources and manifestations of stress in childhood and adolescence. Two conversations with a kindergarten child illustrate a child's inability to think of alternatives in a hypothetical stressful situation. Major stressors, as well as ways of expressing and dealing with them, are listed by grade level. To help teachers become more aware of their role in the process of learning to master stressful feelings and situations, the materials conclude with a list of suggestions regarding dicipline, respect, goal-setting and planning, control, stress symptoms, and physical fitness.
