Developing Programs for (Displaced) Homemakers in Transition.
Arkansas Univ., Fayetteville. Dept. of Vocational Education.
Two projects (Preparation of Vocational Personnel for Assessing Needs and Improving Employability of Selected Homemakers, November 1978 through June 1979, and Developing and Providing Multipurpose Employability Services and a Supportive Environment for Displaced Homemakers and Related Groups, February 1979 through June 1980) were conducted to assess the needs of selected Arkansas displaced homemakers, to prepare vocational personnel to develop and test programs to meet those needs, and to provide guidelines and curriculum materials helpful to other vocational personnel for program development. Analysis of data from 107 questionnaires revealed the following: 67 per cent of the homemakers desire and/or need more job training and employment; 46 per cent of these homemakers had less than a high school diploma; and displaced homemakers experienced legal, housing, transportation, personal, medical, and financial problems. The assessment provided the basic data for the development of programs including seminars to train teachers in the needs of displaced homemakers, to provide teaching aids to increase displaced homemaker employability, and to aid in the development and evaluation of pilot courses involving 125 homemakers. The program sought to help displaced homemakers enhance their self-concept, identify their present skills, organize for their dual role of homemaker/wage-earner, and accept referral to government/community agencies for further training. Recommendations called for increased program funding, more student support services, and making displaced homemaker programs a priority in state planning. (The questionnaire, a sample program outline, references, and case studies are appended.) (MN)
