Mission statements of state universities in Florida are presented, as are statements of each school's interest in new academic programs and data for each university. The institutional statements were drafted in connection with systemwide planning guidelines by the Florida Board of Regents. Following each university role and scope summary are lists of those programs for which the university already has received approval from the Board of Regents to plan or implement, and which the university proposes to explore for planning during the next five years. Each university also indicates the degree to which it plans a change or shift in emphasis. In addition to a general concern to improve instruction within a common core of programs, there is an attempt to emphasize various programs at each university within a systemwide plan. The assignment of programs under that plan is indicated in the statement for each university. An overview of characteristics of public higher education in Florida and academic program planning with respect to institutional role and scope is included. The following universities are included: University of Florida; Florida State University; Florida A&M University; University of South Florida; Florida Atlantic University; University of West Florida; University of Central Florida; Florida International University; and University of North Florida.
