The final report of a 3 year project to improve the quality of life of mentally retarded, cerebral palsied, and epileptic persons in Region III is presented. The first section details the efforts of the project staff in providing competitive employment opportunities or sheltered employment for 40 severely disabled persons. Equipment modification or job alterations which enabled severely disabled persons to perform job tasks are illustrated. Section 2 examines the evaluation process and the prevocational training of 33 severely disabled clients. Methods of examining for and remediating nerve compression in 13 clients are presented in the third section. The fourth section summarizes efforts to solve communication problems among 27 Region III clients. Equipment to improve the independent functioning in a total of 59 clients is reviewed in the fifth section and methods of increasing clients' self care abilities are explored in the sixth section. Dissemination materials and training activities are described in the seventh section. The final section charts client characteristics. Among appendixes are client case histories, an article on the use of a helmet with seizure prone individuals, and instructions for the construction of a handguard. (PHR)
