A study identified continuing education needs of the adult community in Vermont, particularly those who are employed and those who are listed as unemployed. The sample of 3000 persons (945 responded) at 27 sites was surveyed using a 34 item instrument, Continuing Education Needs Assessment Survey, designed by the study. Most respondents indicating an interest in continuing their education were aged 25-34. Their primary interest was in career-related courses, their secondary interest in avocational studies. Most wanted courses in the areas of business and economics, supervisory training, personal improvement, social action, and the humanities. Most sought to improve job skills, prepare for another job, or become more effective people. They would like practical courses that relate to their own situations presented in nontraditional, alternative methods, such as on-the-job training, independent learning, workshops, and short-term seminars. The programs should be easily accessible and offered evenings or afternoons. Many desired statements of program completion or professional certificates and licenses. They felt colleges should offer career and academic guidance, including information about available jobs and jobs that match interests, testing of strengths and weaknesses, and testing to obtain advanced standing.
