Data collected from student applications, personal history forms, class registrations, placement tests, and financial records were examined to derive a personal, academic, and financial profile of the 2,316 new and transfer students who entered Kapiolani Community College during Fall 1980. Selected findings indicate that: (1) most of the students were unmarried (88%), female (63%), and under 21 years of age (65%); (2) approximately the same proportion of students declared a major in the liberal arts (45%) as in vocational areas (44%); (3) nearly 75% were new to higher education; (4) 60% had graduated from Oahu public high schools; (5) only 111 students received financial aid; (6) the average financial aid award was $1,496; and (7) females received financial aid at a ratio of approximately three to one over males. Placement test results indicate that 729 of the students needed remedial work in English, and 1,004 required remedial work in mathematics; however, less than 50% of the students enrolled in a remedial English or mathematics course. Included in the study report are data tables illustrating the findings of the study for six program areas: liberal arts, business, health services, food services and hotel operations, public services, and undeclared majors.
