A Needs Assessment Survey: Staff Development/Continuing Education in the Kansas City Metropolitan Library Network.
Miller, Edward P.; And Others
This survey of library personnel had the following objectives: (1) to determine the best subject areas in which to provide continuing educational opportunities for staff members, (2) to determine the level of subject content for each subject area, (3) to identify an expected participant enrollment for each level of each subject, and (4) to identify the best length for educational offerings for each level. Of the 419 library workers targeted, 38 percent responded to the questionnaire; of these, 60 percent were professionals while 27 percent were support staff. Respondents identified interpersonal relations, public relations, supervisory skills, and reference as four of the most desirable subject areas for staff workshops. The study summarizes and details other findings, explains the survey methodology, and illustrates the data reduction techniques used. Appendices include a sample survey questionnaire, lists of participating libraries, and a display of questionnaire statistics. (FM)
