Rice Street Branch Library Community Analysis Pilot Study. January-May 1979.
Stavn, Virginia; Williams, Carole
A branch library community analysis study identifies library users and nonusers, determines the area of service, and serves as a pilot project for a larger systemwide study. Significant findings suggest that users may be identified by their degree of participation in socio-cultural activities and adult education programs rather than demographic characteristics; divide users into those who visit the library and circulate materials, and those who use materials and services but do not circulate materials; and isolate a group of potential users from nonusers by their degree of participation in socio-cultural activities. User evaluations of the library and its materials are included in the study. Recommendations suggest modification of budget allocations; further analysis of the media collection, lending programs, and the library's public relations program; and a need to establish and maintain communication and cooperation with area agencies, groups, and organizations. An appendix provides details on data collection, demographics, the service area, an in-house survey, a telephone survey, and a community profile. (RAA)
