The paper describes an instructional program that teaches basic decoding skills to learning disabled children, presents the rationale for its development, and offers results of field trials designed to evaluate its effectiveness. The program "ABD's (analysis, blending, decoding) of Reading," initially focuses on auditory tasks and the instructional sequence represents the outcome of a task analysis. The program teaches auditory analysis and auditory blending in isolation at the beginning because of the special value of these skills to the learning disabled child. Among results of a first year field test with 51 learning disabled children were that children who participated in the program performed significantly better than the control group, that teachers were able to work with the program, and that students' attention was easily held by program materials. Results of the second year field test with 24 experimental and 16 control Ss showed significant differences between the two groups on all of the posttests administered except the phoneme analysis subtest.
