Smith, Carl R., Ed.
Iowa Perspective, v4 n4 May 1979
The issue presents two articles on emotionally disabled children. The first, "Self-Control Strategies for Emotionally Disabled Students" by Landis Fick, offers some alternatives to traditional externally managed behavior modification techniques, and defines the teacher's role in a program oriented toward developing self control. The techniques discussed are classified into four separate but interrelated groups: self assessment, self observation, self reinforcement, and self control over the stimulus situation. The second article, "Physical Education at Orchard Place, A Center for Emotionally Disabled Children" by Marcia Olson, describes the physical education program at a center for emotionally disabled children, focusing on how the program can help the children improve their body control and spatial orientation and decrease their fear of movement, which in turn can often improve their mental and emotional state and self confidence.
