This is the first of a projected series of three reports that present the results of a study of the secondary school principalship in Hawaii. The primary purpose of the study was to develop a profile of Hawaii's public high school principals by using field survey research techniques. The design was adapted from a nationwide survey of secondary school principals carried out under the auspices of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). A total of 15 secondary school principals were involved in the statewide survey, which used a questionnaire (included in the report) and interviews to gather data. The study results are organized into nine parts: general background and profile of the secondary principal; task- and job-related activities; the principal and the student; the principal and school community relations; the principal and staff perceptions; the principal and curriculum development; the principal and problem-solving; the principal as a change agent; and the personal, professional, and future aspects of the principalship. A summary of the results is included along with suggestions and a comparison of the results of this study with the NASSP study. (Author/IRT)
