Teaching Interviewing Proficiences to Health Care Professionals.
Fritz, Paul; And Others
Recognizing the need for pharmacy students to develop a competence in communication and interviewing proficiencies, the University of Toledo (Ohio) College of Pharmacy and the Department of Communication have developed two communication courses to be taken by all pharmacy students--"Interpersonal Communication" and "Interpersonal Communication in the Health Care Context." The discussion of these courses includes the following information: (1) three justifications for including interpersonal communication courses in health care curricula, (2) a discussion of the interactionist approach to interviewing, (3) lists of the major course objectives and instructional strategies used in the two courses, (4) brief descriptions of each of the ten four-hour class sessions in the course especially for pharmacists, and (5) a report of the positive feedback received about the pharmacists communication course. Appendixes provide two of the role playing situations used in the advanced course, a course outline of "Interpersonal Communication in the Health Care Context," and an evaluation form for one of the role playing case studies.
