It is vitally important for workers in all regions of the world to form unions and to exercise the rights and discharge the responsibilities which membership involves. The right to organize or join a union is essential not only for the welfare of the individual worker, or for all of those belonging to the union, but also for the welfare of society at large. The World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession believes that education for rights and responsibilities of trade union membership should be a major component of trade union education programs and of all educational institutions. The young people who will enter the work force are potential trade union members and need to be aware of the rights and obligations involved. Recommendations for trade union education at all levels and institutions of education (including goals for teacher education programs) evolve from discussions on: (1) rights and obligations of trade union membership; (2) the role of teacher unions as trade unions; (3) democracy in trade unions; (4) the role of trade unions in developing nations; (5) the role of trade unions in rural development; and (6) the need for trade union education.
