A method is proposed for providing an absolute, in contrast to comparative, evaluation of how well two tests are equated by transforming their raw scores into a particular common scale. The method is direct, not requiring creation of a standard for comparison; expresses its results in scaled rather than raw scores, and allows examination of the scale at as many different abilities as required, rather than calculating a single overall statistic. The method was tried on two levels of a vocabulary test. A latent trait model was used, the levels having some items in common. These items were used to place parameters of the two levels on a unified ability scale. By considering different values of ability, a detailed description of how well the tests had been equated could be obtained. Reading scores were used as predictors, cases to be used were selected at random, and the LOGIST program was used for estimation of parameters. Results illustrated how floor and ceiling effects result in higher scaled scores for those who take the higher level. (Author/GK)
