Developing Reasoning Skills with Attribute Blocks. Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics Monograph No. 15.
Vanbeynen, John G.; McGinty, Robert L.
Activities designed to develop reasoning skills with Attribute Blocks are presented. The items are arranged according to age level, however, much overlapping exists between the groupings. The level of the activities ranges from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Some of the items are also viewed as appropriate for prospective elementary and secondary teachers. Each activity is self-contained and is listed with the intended purpose, materials needed, and teaching suggestions. Logical relationships are embodied in observable attributes such as color, shape, and size of the Attribute Blocks. The mathematical ideas that are developed in the activities include: (1) the use of the logical connectives - and, or, not; (2) distinguishing attributes; (3) sequential thinking; (4) problem solving; (5) syllogisms; and (6) pattern recognition. Duplicate pages of activities have been included in the center of the book to be removed, copied, or cut up without destroying the flow of the materials. (MP)
