While the format is designed to be introductory (for use in classes, community groups, churches, etc.), the catalog is meant to be used by all kinds of people concerned with building a new Appalachia, "faithful to the traditions and the hopes of its people." Each topical section begins with an introduction and then lists issues and resources specific to the topic. Topics include blacks, community centers, community economic development, culture, health care, housing, labor organizing, law and repression, Native Americans, natural resources and energy, occupational health and safety, and women. An afterword deals with Appalachian religion and education as shaped by elements of terrain and colonialism. Religious and educational resources are listed separately by national organizations, regional organizations, and publications.
