The purpose of this project was to (1) engage in a statewide survey of early intervention programs concerned with the school-age child and his or her family, and (2) to examine a "family impact" model focused on two systems: the family and the school. A particular focus of the survey was on programs whose methods of impacting, (i.e. service delivery) were innovative, oriented towards service integration on a community and/or neighborhood level and presented a cost-effective method of operation through staff-sharing arrangements, use of volunteers or in-kind services. The model was employed to determine exactly what types of relationships were struck between the early intervention program and the local public school in order for program services to be delivered to the child and, very importantly, his or her family. Early intervention strategies were examined in the light of facilitating the interaction of these systems given their socio-cultural, economic, and political contexts. (Author/DB)
