Teaching Ethnic Awareness: Methods and Materials for the Elementary School.
King, Edith W.
This resource book for elementary school teachers provides methods, materials, activities and a rationale for multi-ethnic education. Part I provides a background of concepts and theories about multi-ethnic and pluralistic education. Chapters of this section (1) discuss those trends and forces which have shaped multi-ethnic education; (2) define key terms and concepts in ethnic and minority studies; (3) examine the importance of multi-ethnic education for teachers; (4) provide practical ideas for implementing multiculturalism, both in the classroom and in the community; and (5) indicate future directions for multi-ethnic education. Part II sets forth teacher-designed and tested activities for multi-ethnic elementary school classrooms. Activities are discussed in terms of three general age or grade levels: kindergarten and primary levels (4-7 years), middle elementary school levels (8-10 years), and upper elementary school levels (10-12 years). Part III provides a guide to books, multi-cultural resources and multi-ethnic organizations of interest to the concerned reader. (Author/MP)
