California Community Colleges. Student Profile: Fall 1979 Credit Enrollment. Vol. l.
Tanner, Tom; Payton, Wendy
The first of a series of statewide student profiles, this report summarizes data characterizing the 1,042,496 students enrolled in credit courses at the California community colleges during the first census week of Fall 1979. The data, presented on a series of tables, are broken down and cross-tabulated by age, enrollment status, full-time/part-time status, geographic region, race, residency, sex, student level, units attempted, and veteran status. Major findings indicate that most students (65.5%) were freshmen, that females outnumbered males by 9%, and that the median age was 25 years. The ethnic/racial distributions indicate that 71.5% of the students were Caucasian, 10.9% were Hispanic, 9.7% were Black, 5.2% were Asian, 1.5% were American Indian, and 1.2% were Filipino. The highest concentration of non-white students occurred in the Los Angeles area, and the lowest concentration was found in the northern part of the state. Only 25% of the students carried a full-time load, and 50% carried less than six units. Similar variations in the proportion of students enrolled for 12 units or more occurred across racial, regional, and age variables. (JP)
