A Study to Determine Student Goals for Students Enrolled in a Community College.
Otto, Ann McGee
As part of an effort to include student educational objectives in the institutional planning process, a Student Goals Inventory (SGI) was administered during registration in Fall 1979 to the total population of students enrolled in credit courses at Florida Keys Community College. The SGI requested students to rank order the importance of goal statements in the areas of career, personal, academic, social, and cultural development and their development as a member of the community. Inventory data, based on a 61% response rate, were analyzed in terms of five population segments: all students, part-time and full-time students; male and female students; students under 27 years of age and those 27 years of age or older; and degree and non-degree seeking students. Summary findings indicate a general agreement among the various population segments in terms of the rated importance of goal statements. Among the most important objectives were choosing a career; exploring individual talents, skills, and abilities; increasing inter-personal skills; learning more about an individually chosen field of interest; and learning to work through the system and become involved in community affairs. The study report presents a review of the literature and recommendations based upon SGI findings. (JP)
