Data Assessment in a Regional Medical Library Consultant/Extension Program: Indicators of Institutional Change. Papers and Reports, No. 18.
Van Toll, Faith; McNamara, Mary E.
In January 1972, the Kentucky-Ohio-Michigan Regional Medical Library Network initiated an extramural program with a coordinator at each of its participating libraries to function as liaison between the network and basic units. Data collection devices were developed in order to evaluate the program in terms of its ability to foster responsible hospital library participation in the biomedical communication network. The extramural program is evaluated in this report from four perspectives: (1) nature of activities, (2) institutional change, (3) network changes, and (4) program objectives. Tables show the amount of time spent on each type of activity and the number of contacts in each of several categories. Data on institutional change were gathered through an institutional annual report system, which collects data in five categories: administration, personnel, professional and network development, user services, and technical services. Local network changes, ascertained through local yearly reports, are briefly discussed. Program objectives are reported as they existed at the start of the program, and compared to subsequent refinements, with relevant data about their development. Finally, a discussion summarizes the data collected with regard to the four evaluation perspectives mentioned above. (SW)
