Planning and Using the Blackboard. Practical Language Teaching, No. 1.
Mugglestone, Patricia
This guide to the classroom use of the blackboard, part of a series intended for second language teachers, is profusely illustrated in such a way as to make it useful in many classroom contexts. A discussion of the different varieties of classroom writing boards precedes an extensive "blackboard methodology." The mechanics of writing on the board and planning the layout of the board are treated in individual chapters. An extensive section on techniques for effective use of the blackboard emphasizes a combination of terse writing and cogent illustration. The following aspects of second language instruction receive individual attention: language structures, vocabulary, spelling, phonology, drills, dialogues, picture composition, free oral practice, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing practice, and testing and correction.
