The System for Integrated Language Communications Observation (SILCO) was developed to provide descriptive information about integrated language communication instruction. Such instruction is defined as that which interrelates listening, speaking, reading, and writing through developmental sequences of skills resources and activities and provides active involvement of children in real-life experiences to facilitate application of the related communication skills that are being learned. The six categories of SILCO, each measuring a specific aspect of integration, are (1) instructional organization, (2) student communication areas, (3) resources in use, (4) skill development emphasis, (5) real-life communication qualities, and (6) integrative qualities. SILCO was field tested in three integrated and three separate-subject elementary school classrooms in three different school districts. Four trained observers recorded three 30-minute observations in each room during selected portions of reading and language arts instruction. The results of these observations were analyzed using the SILCO categories. Although the study was developmental and was conducted and field tested with a limited number of schools, the findings suggest that SILCO has many educational implications for teachers, administrators, and researchers in the field of language communication.
