The strategy presented in this paper for evaluating students' reading behavior is an adaptation of the methods used in Yetta Goodman and Carolyn Burke's "Reading Miscue Inventory." Five major steps in evaluating reading behavior are described: (1) select appropriate materials; (2) prepare an outline of the major components of the text, against which to judge students' comprehension (the outline will vary in type according to the type of text and the elements the student is expected to learn from it); (3) tape record the student's oral reading; (4) after a brief distractor, tape record the student's retelling of the material just read; and (5) evaluate the retelling and the oral reading together to determine instructional strategies. The following aids are included in the paper: sample outlines of expository and narrative texts of the type teachers can use in evaluating students' retellings; questions to guide evaluations of retellings and oral readings; an example of how the evaluative questions are applied to a student's retelling of a story; suggestions for analyzing students' oral reading miscues to determine their use of phonemic, syntactic, and semantic analysis; and an example of a completed form used in evaluating a student's oral reading and retelling of a story.
